Become a Mentor

Mentors are essential to Aspire's mission. By guiding and inspiring children, mentors help them build confidence, develop skills, and imagine brighter futures. Sharing your knowledge and encouragement can create lasting change and help break the cycle of poverty. Join us to empower the next generation.

Eligibility

The eligible mentor must possess a college-level understanding of economics or finance. To apply, you are required to fill out a short application.  If you are accepted, you are required to attend a 1 hour info-session to teach you the curriculum. If you meet one or more of these criteria, you are most likely eligible to become a mentor:

High-school Students

  • Currently enrolled in AP Microeconomics/AP Macroeconomics or the equivalent

  • already have completed AP Microeconomics/AP Macroeconomics or the equivalent

College Students:

  • already have completed AP Microeconomics/AP Macroeconomics or the equivalent

  • currently enrolled in a college economics course

  • have completed a college economics course

Other:

  • Tell us more about yourself in the application!

Responsibilities

Mentors are responsible for teaching an hour-long class of around 30 students once per week for seven weeks. These clases typically occur on a Saturday or Sunday. Mentors should offer personalized guidance to students and encourage participants to think critically and apply what they learn.

If you are thinking about becoming a mentor, you must commit to teaching all twelve classes—a full course.  Two mentors are assigned to every course and will get to know each other. If a mentor must be absent for one of the classes, he is required to coordinate with his partner mentor so there is at least one mentor teaching the class.

Logging Hours

Mentors teaching a full course can log 35 hours for their 12 hours of volunteer work to account for the expertise needed and the time commitment involved.
